    Raytraced games in 2 to 3 years, says Intel


    Intel sebagai salah satu perusahaan yang mempromosikan teknologi Ray Tracing dalam games, menunjukkan keseriusannya. Melalui sebuah wawancara oleh PCGH dengan Michael Vollmer salah satu executives Intel, seperti yang di quote berikut, mencakup beberapa pernyataan menarik.

    PCGH: There already is a Raytracing demo from Intel and Daniel Pohl, but the optical difference to the original rasterizer hasn't been very big.

    Dr. Michael Vollmer: Please see this as a technical demo. The existing Quake 4 material had been taken, in order to make the technical effects visible - but that has nothing to do with the visual perfection. A complete demo, which contains the graphical aspect, too, is likely to look different. But there are all the basic features already, like shadow cast, surface reflections; you can already tinker with the idea that this component of visualization will be adopted by the gaming industry sooner or later.

    PCGH: Are there game developers that already want to work with Raytracing?

    Dr. Michael Vollmer: We keep in touch with companies all over the world - I dare say that in two to three years time we will see something. There already are some individual approaches, especially in the science sector, which show that Raytracing algorithms are scaling very well with the numbers of cores. But the migration to a new programming technology takes years; Raytracing is still in an early stage.

    nah, ini klo si Microsoft menyerah di Rasteration, baru Ray Tracing bisa di"raih"

    nah, masalahnya wa lihat MS masih bersikukuh ama Rasteration, yang jujur makin maju aja kok
    tapi gak tahu juga ding entar, gimana si Intel bisa "merayu" Microsoft
    ato di tahun mendatang OS non Microsoft yang menawarkan Ray Traced?

    klo dari sisi NV dan ATI, kedua raksasa grafis itu sepertinya belum begitu tertarik ke Ray Tracing
    why? klo mau pindah ke Ray Tracing, berarti Rasteration harus "musnah"
    karena Ray Tracing gak ada backward compatibility mode ke Rasteration (beda liga soalnya)
    dari sisi bisnis, si NV dan ATI mungkin tetep stay di Rasteration beberapa waktu ke depan, you know lah, klo game DX10 masih ada kompatibility ke belakang di VGA DX9, DX8 ato bahkan DX7 (walo dengan detail sangat-sangatlah Low)
    they have to sell the vid card lah, dan memastikan ke konsumen klo VGA2 yang jadul masih tetep bisa "menjalankan" new game
    contoh: X1950Pro main Crysis bukan hal yang aneh lagi (selama masih Rasteration)
    tapi HD5850 atu GTX 300 (tahun depan) walo mau sesangar gimana juga gak bakal bisa main Ray Trace

    menarik dinanti, gebarakan Intel Larabee (Ray Tracing *katanya) melawan dominasi Microsoft, Nvidia dan ATI (Rasteration)

    Bener banget..backward compatibility itu penting banget..konsumen ga bakalan mau rugi..secara game-game yang sekarang beredar masih banyak DX based..begitu juga dengan video card yang beredar pun masih DX based jadinya developer game juga ga bkalan dengan mudah ngeaplikasiin ray-tracing..2-3 tahun lagi mungkin bakalan terjadi untuk PS3..tapi untuk PC Windows sepertinya enggak..

    khan intel malah udah rilis pernyataan resmi soal tetep support rasteration?
    Itu lho yg kemarin sempat malah ditertawakan, "katanya mo realtimes raytrace, kok sekarang bilang support rasteration? Intel mencla mencle!!"

    ternyata maksudnya Intel, larabee bakal support 2-2 nya, sekaligus memperkenalkan teknik realtimes rendering yg baru berbasis raytrace
    Logikanya, kalo udah bisa realtimes raytrace..... mo rasteration mah jadi mudah. Ngak pake sulit

    tapi, NVIDIA kek nya malah udah duluan gila2an.... walau dia seperti tidak membidik gamers tapi para 3D designer.
    Di embatlah si mental-ray...... mungkin idenya dari buku ini, berikut cuplikan pdf nya :

    Memang roadmap selalu di bocorkan sedikit dalam bentuk rumor, ada website yang baik hati buat ngumpulin ( tapi jangan kaget kalo spoiler ) 2009 Roadmap

    Nah dari roadmap di website itu, kita bahkan udah bisa lihat kalau windows 8 akan dikeluarin di 2012 , padahal windows 7 aja blom keluar, nah agar sampai ke tenggat waktu roadmap itu, sejak sekarang windows 8 sudah di riset, mungkin blom sampai dikembangkan.

    Nah hal yang sama berlaku untuk ray tracing dalam game. Sekarang dibicarakan, diusulkan, 2 - 5 tahun lagi, baru keluar sebagai sebuah produk, karena sudah masuk dalam roadmap pengembangan industri saat ini atau paling cepet tahun depan dimasukkan ke roadmap tahun 2012. Mungkin nvidia akan menolak, karena kalo nggak salah, nvidia udah punya roadmap sampai tahun 2015 kedepan.

    Kalo dalam skala industri, roadmap itu penting, perubahan kecil bisa dilakukan dengan cepat, semacam implementasi USB 3.0 atau SATA 3 Gbps, tapi major updates kayak Ray Trace, itu harus di riset dan dibuat dulu hardware nya, di test, di genjot performa nya, QC terus2an, baru rilis. Ray Trace bahkan nggak bisa dibilang major updates karena itu bener bener hal yang baru. Kayak PCIe2 dulu. Gw udah denger ada PCIe sejak gw awal masuk kuliah (2001) baru beberapa tahun kemudian dirilis ( 2004 - 2005 lah ya kalo nggak salah ).

    Kalo nggak gitu, ada kemungkinan bakal menghancurkan perusahaannya karena salah manajemen. Salah manajemen ya kayak yang waktu itu kejadian sama AMD, begitu caplok ATI, duung, 2500++ karyawan dipecat. Gw rasa itu karena aji mumpung, pas ATI lagi jeblok or something. Nggak termasuk dalam roadmap finansial mereka. Jadinya mau nggak mau ya di lakukan "evaluasi".

    Nah dari kasus diatas, keputusan untuk meniadakan Ray Trace pada Dx11 sudah benar. Menurut opini gw.

    Ngapain sedia payung di musim kemarau berkepanjangan ? Jangan jangan waktu musim hujan payungnya malah udah rusak / bolong kepanasan.

    makanya NV, ATI dan MS emoh ke Ray trace di DX11
    apalagi console yang notabene-nya gak seluwes PC bisa diganti-ganti komponen

    wa sih sebenarnya dah lama aja memandang hal ini dengan cara gini:
    - klo rasteration dah bisa mirip ray trace secara untuk game, ya kenapa harus ke ray trace
    - ray trace belum ada yang menjadi standard, masih banyak model ray trace (klo rasteration kan dah jelas, ada DirectX, ada OpenGL)

    ya cuma cara pandangku aja sih
    yang jelas wa lebih suka rasteration dan enggak muluk2 ampe ray tracing
    tunggu aja Cinema 2.0, pendekatan CG real time render based from rasteration
    kemungkinan klo gak dipake developer, akan ada di DX11 (seperti Tessellation juga)

    lom jaman si Ray masih Ras. Kayanya jadi release di OS 8 ? karena Dx 11 / 12 release di 7 kayanya yee... Jadi Dx 13 bisa Ray tracing hehehe!

    Gwe berharapa loncat ke VR (virtual reality) sapa taw otak kita bisa di tanem radeon or geforce heheheh... sambil bobo main game ^_^

    ^ nope, si Intel ngasih opsi dan kapabilitas untuk ray trace hanya sebagai tambahan fitur kok
    Larabee juga masih akan main di rasteratin
    ya "DirectX" lagi ujung-ujung_nya
    ... masak iya Intel mau jualan VGA yang gak bisa ngejalanin Crysis (hanya karena dia gak bisa rasteration .... )
