Indonesian police arrest two men on cyber terrorism charges

Police have arrested two men accused of using computer technology to aid terrorists in Indonesia, including one who smuggled a laptop to a jailed Bali bomber who used it to communicate with fellow militants, a police official said Wednesday.

There was no evidence, however, that Imam Samudra, who has been sentenced to death for planning and carrying out the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings, used the laptop to help organize attacks on the same island last year, said Col. Petrus Reinhard Golose of Indonesia's anti-terror task force.

The second suspect, Agung Prabowo, was accused of helping create a Web site last year that suggested ways to assassinate foreigners in the capital Jakarta, he said.

Prabowo and Agung Setyadi, who is accused of smuggling the computer to Samudra, were arrested last week in separate raids in Semarang, central Java province, Golose said, but neither has been formally charged.

Indonesia has been hit by annual terrorist attacks blamed on regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah since bombings on the resort island of Bali in 2002 killed 202 people, most of them foreign tourists.

Setyadi, a 31-year-old information technology lecturer, smuggled the computer to Samudra in July 2005 with the help of a warden at his jail on Bali island, Golose said.

Samudra chatted over the Internet for several months with Setyadi and other Islamic extremists before Samudra was moved to a high-security prison in October following a second set of attacks on Bali, Golose told reporters. One topic of conversation was credit card fraud over the Internet as a way to fund terror attacks, Golose said.

He said Samudra engaged in "intense communication" with unidentified people before the second Bali attacks.

Golose declined to say whether the prison warden was also being investigated.

He said Prabowo helped to create a Web site that outlined the best way to assassinate foreigners in Jakarta, providing tips as to where they could be found and instructions such as "ensure the target is killed by shooting him several times in the heart and head."

Golose described Prabowo as a professional hacker.
