Seagate offers punters money back - The INQUIRER

SEAGATE Technology is to offer punters who bought a hard drive from the outfit during the last six years a cash refund or free backup and recovery software.

The pair bought Seagate hard drives in 2005 and found that the storage capacity was seven per cent less than what was promised on the box.

She said that the phrase a 1GB equals 1 billion bytes, was misleading to consumers. Computer operating systems report hard drive capacity using a binary definition of GB, whereby 1GB equals 1, 073, 741, 824 bytes.


Seagate have decided to settle and If a judge approves the settlement, anyone who bought a Seagate brand hard disk drive between March 22, 2001, and Dec. 31, 2006, can submit an online claim form for cash or software.

Yah, bagi yang mengerti komputer sedikit, pasti tahu kemana hilangnya ~20 GB itu, misalnya gw baru saja beli WD 320 GB, tapi space yg tersedia cuma 298 GB, yah soalnya 1 GB, bagi windows, bukanlah 1, 000, 000, 000 byte tapi 1, 073, 741, 824 byte... sementara bagi seagate, 1 GB ya 1, 000, 000, 000 byte...

Tapi bagi orang awam, pasti mengira kalau ada yg salah dengan hard disk baru nya...

Yah orang awam kan nggak begitu peduli detail nya komputer... yg penting bisa dipakai.

Orang tua gw contohnya, sukanya beli notebook... padahal jelas2 miskin value... tapi karena lebih praktis dll.. ah sial deh.

Hanya saja begini, seagate menggunakan definisi GIGA dari SI (Satuan Internasional) dan bukan dari angka biner (yg 2 pangkat itu lho)

Nah di satuan SI.. lihat di wiki saja deh SI prefix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
