Bahkan belakangan ini semakin banyak perusahaan besar, seperti Toyota, Honda, dan Sony, yang berlomba-lomba menciptakan robot yang mampu menghibur. Robot-robot ada menyerupai manusia atau binatang, lengkap dengan gerakan dan suaranya.

Namun, dengan semakin berkembangnya teknologi dan semakin mudahnya membuat robot, para pakar militer justru mengkhawatirkan mesin-mesin ini disalahgunakan oleh pihak-pihak yang tak bertanggung jawab, seperti kelompok teroris atau militan.
Noel Sharkey, pakar intelijen dan robot di University of Sheffield, Inggris, mengatakan bahwa ia yakin rendahnya biaya pembuatan robot membuat kelompok teroris berpotensi melirik mesin-mesin pintar ini untuk dimanfaatkan sebagai senjata pembunuh.
Sejumlah negara dan perusahaan bahkan sudah memulai pengembangan teknologi untuk menghasilkan robot pembunuh. Untuk bidang ini, Departemen Pertahanan AS menjadi pihak yang paling maju.
Pasukan AS bahkan sudah memanfaatkan lebih dari 4.000 robot pembunuh ke Irak.
"Masalahnya sekarang adalah sulitnya menjaga robot-robot berteknologi tinggi itu tak jatuh ke pihak lawan. Bila itu terjadi, maka akan dengan mudah teknologi itu dicontek dan digunakan untuk kepentingan jahat," kata Sharkey, Rabu (27/2).
Ia mengatakan bahwa dengan rendahnya biaya pembuatan robot, dan melimpahnya komponen siap rangkai di pasar, maka tak perlu keahlian tinggi untuk menghasilkan robot dengan tugas sesuai keinginan.
Kondisi inilah yang harus diwaspadai, karena bisa jadi para teroris akan lebih suka memanfaatkan jasa robot untuk melakukan penyerangan ketimbang merelakan seorang anggotanya melakukan aksi bom bunuh diri
