Gaming dengan RAM 4GB - 21-08-08, 14:09



Prakata …
Dewasa ini kebutuhan Random Access Memory memang semakin meningkat. Beberapa waktu lalu RAM yang dibutuhkan untuk memainkan Daytona dan Fifa 98 hanyalah 16MB. Lalu bengkak di beberapa aplikasi DX6.1 menjadi rata-rata 32MB. Meningkat lagi saat DirectX sedang heboh bersaing dengan OpenGL, yep, saya masih ingat betul hingga “meminta lebih” anggaran SPP dan SKS kuliah untuk “diselewengkan” guna menambah RAM hingga menjadi 64MB demi Quake 3 Arena. Semakin maju dunia gaming PC, maka meningkat pula kebutuhan RAM itu … 128MB, 512MB dan hingga akhirnya sekarang umum memakai 2GB RAM. Didukung dengan teknologi yang makin maju dengan harga memory yang makin murah, maka “perkembangbiakan” kebutuhan RAM itu menjadi mutlak.


Bagaimana RAM bekerja dalam real time gaming?
Saya akan mencoba memaparkan secara garis besar saja cara kerja RAM khususnya di aplikasi game.

Saat aplikasi game di jalankan, file-file game (dari folder installasi) di hard disk dibaca, lalu dikirim ke RAM. Karena tidak bisa dipungkiri bahwa RAM itu JAUH lebih cepat daripada hard disk. Jika data yang harus dikirim ke RAM itu melebihi kapasitas RAM, maka beberapa ada yang mengendap sementara di paging file ato virtual memory yang sudah dikoordinasi oleh OS. Nah, jangan heran jika ada game sinting yang “on-the fly” butuh ngirim data sebesar 1.5GB ke RAM, maka sudah pasti kita akan menjumpai adegan terputus-putus jika dengan RAM 2GB. Terlalu banyak data yang mengendap di paging files, dan hard disk juga terlalu pelan apabila dibandingkan dengan RAM.

Back to schematic, sudah pasti data-data temporary itu lalu dikirim ke Processor untuk “diterjemahkan”.

Oleh processor, data itu dipilah-pilah. Si processor itu membaca apa yang dikirim oleh RAM, lalu dengan hitungan se-per-sekian detik, processor menulis lagi ke RAM untuk kemudian dikirim lagi ke semua yang menancap di motherboard, terutama (untuk gaming) ya Graphic Card, dan soundcard. Di bahasa “gaul”-nya hardware, hal ini sering kita jumpai dengan istilah Read and Write.

Berulang, berulang dan berulang …


Anggapan bahwa RAM sebesar 2GB yang sudah lebih dari cukup itu bisa saya nyatakan 90% benar untuk game jaman sekarang under Windows XP. Bagaimana dengan Windows Vista?

Kenali OS dan “perilaku”nya terhadap kapasitas RAM
Faktanya, Operating System 32bit itu hanya mampu “merekut dan mempekerjakan” 2GB RAM secara efektif. Jika anda memaksa memakai RAM lebih dari 4GB atau 8GB, maka si OS 32bit hanya mampu mengalokasikan RAM secara hardware di sekitar 3GB saja … percuma memang memasang 2x2GB di OS Windows XP 32 ato Vista 32.

Bagaimana dengan OS 64bit? Sudah tidak perlu diragukan, mereka sanggup mengelola jumlah RAM yang bombastis

Untuk menyingkat waktu, mari kita segera ke pokok inti bahasan, yakni: Gaming dengan RAM 4GB



Metoda, metode dan methods …
(1) Single channel *only
Saya hanya menggunakan metoda SINGLE channel. Karena:
- saat test 2GB, saya hanya sebatas mencabut 1 keping 2GB (dari total 2x2GB)
- lalu saat test 4GB, saya memasang keping satunya lagi
- saat 4GB (2x2GB), saya akan memasang di mode Single channel, *harus adil

(2) Min FPS highlight
Fokus ada pada MIN FPS. Apa gunanya anda bermain dengan max fps hingga 40fps+, tapi di suatu waktu kita menjumpai 1 fps?

Test Bed
- Processor: Intel Xeon E3110 @default 3GHz
- RAM: 2x2GB G.Skill Pi Series PC6400, @default DDR2-800 5-5-5-15
- VGA: Radeon HD4870 (Catalyst 8.8 WHQL)
- OS: Vista Ultimate 64bit
- Game Test: World in Conflict dan Crysis

- World in Conflict: Very High l DX10 l 1680x1050 4AA 8AF l default bench
- Crysis: Very High l DX10 l 1440x900 l Assault_Harbor bench


Well, 2GB vs 4GB tidak begitu berpengaruh di sini, menandakan 2GB sudah lebih dari cukup untuk World in Conflict



Wao! … sengaja saya bench di Assault_Harbor, yang lebih mencerminkan ke real gaming. Sudah pasti map ini adalah yang terberat di Crysis
Yep dengan 2GB, anda akan sering menjumpai FPS enol koma, dan system mengalami stuttering hebat di real Very High DX10



Verdict
Contoh under 1 fps yang ada di Crysis itu memang extreme, tapi begitulah kenyataannya. Pada game Crysis, tampak RAM 4GB sangat berperan di sini. Terutama jika anda main di Very High preset under Vista DX10. Sedikit cerita dari saya, beberapa waktu yang lalu saya sudah mencoba berbagai VGA untuk tujuan Very High DX10 di Crysis yang hasilnya nge-lag semua dengan RAM 2GB even @ DDR2-1200 *PC9600 overclocked* … Ternyata permasalahan lebih pada jumlah RAM. Begitu banyak data yang diload pada game Crysis (Very High), membuat physic RAM = habis. Sudah pasti game akan berjalan terputus-putus karena lambat membaca dari virtual memory HDD.

Lalu siapa yang butuh gaming dengan 4GB RAM? Memang saat ini belum begitu terlihat, tapi dengan model game ala Crysis yang mempresentasikan “dunia” game yang luas dengan detil minta ampun, sudah pasti mimpi “tersedak” karena nge-lag akan menjadi kenyataan apabila dengan RAM 2GB saja. Kabarnya upcoming Far Cry 2 akan mempunyai “world” 7KM x 7KM persegi. Dan siapa tahu beberapa game mendatang juga haus RAM.

Investasi ke 4GB untuk saat ini dan jangka ke depan mungkin dirasa lebih baik. Mengingat harga RAM 2x2GB sudah semakin bersahabat. Tidak bermaksud menjelekan, tapi kenyatan di real-game, 2x1GB PC8500 itu jauh lebih buruk daripada 2x2GB PC6400. Terlebih di gaming resolusi HD dengan AA/AF; maka speed RAM dan latency RAM itu benar-benar seperti terabaikan, mengingat kondisi memang lebih condong ke GPU bound. Kecuali anda bermain SuperPI atau 3DMark di resolusi 1024x768.

Berbicara di luar kapasitas, RAM PC8500 itu KALAU tidak anda overclock manually, maka hanya terdetek DDR2-800, BUKAN DDR2-1066 Karena sudah menjadi standardisasi dari JEDEC, bahwa RAM DDR2 tertinggi ada pada spek: DDR2-800 5-5-5-15 1.8V. Jadi menurut saya, akan lebih baik jika ram PC8500 ke atas (ato lebih dikenal dengan High performance hingga Extreme performance) itu sementara waktu ini diabaikan, karena tidak cukup bersahabat bagi para “pure” gamer. Terlebih harganya yang cukup tinggi, dan anda masih perlu extra overclocking untuk sekedar “menikmati” kegunaan memory-memory sakti tersebut. Toh pada real game, justru kapasitas besar itu lebih memegang peranan. Laporan harga pasar pada saat artikel ini ditulis, harga 2x1GB PC8500 rata-rata lebih mahal daripada 2x2GB PC6400.

Loh bukannya prinsip kerja readyboost tu ngeload data dai HDD k UFD ??? N bukannya kecepatan USB udah lumayan lebih cepet dari HDD ???
Doh jadi kepengen nih nambah memory tapi kalo dipikir2 nungguin DDR3 aja ah. Tahun depan AM3 keluar.
